The Fine Line Between Forced and Arranged Marriage f

The parents of a Hindu woman have called off her wedding with a Muslim man following protests from their community.

The ceremony was due to take place in Maharashtra’s Nashik district on Sunday, July 18, 2021.

However, the family’s Hindu community protested against the wedding after the invitation card went viral.

The family buckled under the pressure, and cancelled everything.

The 28-year-old bride’s father, local jeweller Prasad Adgaonkar, wrote a letter to the community body.

He said that they have decided to not pursue with the wedding ceremony due to the “present situation”.

He added: “However, due to the present situation, I can’t say if they will stay together.”

According to reports, the marriage had already been legally registered at a Nashik court in May 2021, with both families present.

When planning the ceremony, the former bride-to-be planned to tie the knot as per Hindu rituals.

But after the invitation cards were leaked to WhatsApp groups, her Hindu community hit back, describing the upcoming wedding as a ‘love jihad’.

According to one community member, the social media outrage urged the family to call off the ceremony.

He also said the woman’s family received threats over the telephone, leaving them no option but to cancel the wedding.

Sunil Mahalkar, president of Nashik’s Sant Narhari Maharaj Lad Suvarnakar Sanstha community centre, received the cancellation letter first. He said:

“The woman’s father has informed us through a letter that he is calling off the marriage ceremony of his daughter due to certain circumstances.”

The family are reportedly standing by their daughter’s choice to marry a Muslim man, and will not force them to separate.

They also said that they made no attempts at forced conversion.

They claim the families knew each other previously and agreed to the marriage.

Prior to the wedding, Prasad Adgaonkar claimed that his daughter had physical disabilities. Therefore, the family struggled to find a suitable match for her.

The groom, Asif Khan, is a former classmate of hers, and the pair decided to wed.

Unfortunately for the bride and groom, circumstances surrounding their wedding then changed. Speaking of this, one family member said:

“A lot of pressure started coming from people of the community and others, and so it was decided to cancel the marriage function.”

Despite receiving threats about their daughter’s choice to marry a Muslim man, Prasad Adgaonkar and his wife are not taking the matter to the police.
